THE HISTORY OF Rosé Wine
The origins of rosé wine date back to ancient times. The Greeks and Romans already produced wines of a pinkish hue by briefly macerating the skins of red grapes in the must. At that time, rosé wines were considered inferior in quality compared to darker red wines.
In the Middle Ages, rosé wine gained increasing popularity in Europe. Monks in monasteries played a significant role in wine production and contributed to the dissemination of winemaking knowledge. Their influence helped improve winemaking techniques and refine the quality of rosé wines.
However, it was at the beginning of the 18th century that rosé wine experienced a true boom in France. The Provence region is considered the birthplace of world-renowned rosé wine. Provençal winemakers developed specific techniques to produce high-quality rosé wines. They used grape varieties such as Grenache, Cinsault, and Syrah to create subtle and aromatic blends.
Over the centuries, the demand for rosé continued to grow. In the 19th century, with the development of winemaking techniques, it became possible to produce paler and more delicate rosé wines, matching the tastes of the time. These wines were highly appreciated in aristocratic circles, and their popularity quickly spread throughout Europe.
In the 20th century, rosé experienced ups and downs. It was neglected for a while in favor of more robust red wines but regained popularity in the 1970s. Today, rosé wine is enjoyed worldwide. It is produced in many wine regions, including France, Spain, Italy, the United States, and Australia. Rosé wines come in a variety of styles, ranging from pale and delicate wines to darker and more structured ones.
The Winemaking Process of Rosé Wine
Rosé wine is primarily made from black grape varieties, which are black-skinned grapes with white pulp, the same used for red wine. It is also possible to use gray grape varieties and a very small amount of white grape varieties, provided they are blended with red grape varieties.
For the harvest, it takes place very early to preserve the aromatic freshness of the berries. Next comes the winemaking stage. There are three different methods depending on the type of wine desired:
Maceration Rosé
This type of rosé is made from black grape harvests that are then placed in a vat for 12 to 24 hours before fermentation begins. This allows the berries to separate from the pulp, skin, seeds, and juice. During this maceration period, the pigments in the grapes infuse the juice, giving the rosé its color. The must is then pressed and separated from the solid parts, and fermentation begins at a low temperature (between 18 and 20°C) to preserve the aromas.
Pressing Rosé
This winemaking method involves directly pressing the grapes after the harvest. The juice is then collected and placed in a vat for fermentation. Pressing rosé has a lighter color, a salmon hue, and lighter floral and citrus aromas.
Saignée Rosé
Made similarly to maceration rosé, saignée rosé is obtained from red grapes. The maceration lasts only a few hours, the juice takes on a pink hue, and then the vat is "bled." This means that part of the juice is released to be vinified separately, and the rest is used for making red wine. Saignée rosés are darker and have more body and aromas.
SOME GRAPE VARIETIES OF ROSÉ
Several grape varieties are commonly used to produce rosé wine around the world. Here are some of the most popular varieties:
