Vieux Château Certan: A Jewel of Elegance in Pomerol

A legacy built on terroir, precision and family passion

At the heart of the prestigious Pomerol appellation, Vieux Château Certan stands as a benchmark of Right Bank Bordeaux excellence. This historic 14-hectare vineyard boasts a mosaic of gravel and clay soils, ideal for Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Acquired by the Thienpont family in 1924, the estate has risen to the top of Pomerol under the meticulous care of three generations. Today, Alexandre Thienpont leads the estate with a philosophy that marries traditional methods with modern precision, creating wines that reflect the soul of their terroir in every bottle.

Harvesting is done by hand, followed by a precise selection process, fermentation in temperature-controlled vats, and aging for 18 to 22 months in French oak barrels, half of which are new each year. This process gives the wines their balance, aromatic depth, and longevity. Renowned vintages like 2010, 2015, and 2016 highlight the estate’s ability to craft complex, structured, and long-lived wines. With their notes of dark berries, truffle, spice and floral undertones, the wines of Vieux Château Certan are known for their harmony, refinement, and unmistakable Pomerol character.

Alongside its grand vin, the estate produces La Gravette de Certan — a second wine made primarily from younger vines. Though more approachable in its youth, it benefits from the same expert craftsmanship and attention to detail.
