vintage 2023 "En primeur"
- Pauillac, Saint-Estèphe, Margaux, Saint-Julien, Saint Emilion, Pomerol, Pessac Léognan -
Buying a wine en primeur means ordering a wine in the process of maturing that was harvested and vinified the previous year. It cannot be delivered now, and you will have to wait 2 years before receiving it.
At the time of release, generally in May, the price of a wine en primeur is lower than its value once bottled. It's a win-win situation: you get a preferential price when you buy the wine, and the château gets a cash advance so it can vinify in optimal conditions.

Bordeaux has once again succeeded in coping with the particular conditions of 2023. The result is a rich, intense vintage, full of freshness and balance. A vintage in which the winegrowers demonstrated a rare resilience in the face of climatic hazards.
After a rainy spring and a late summer, the winegrowers managed the pressure of mildew and took advantage of an idyllic September (cool nights and lots of sunshine) to harvest Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot at perfect maturity.
The 2023 vintage is characterized by wines of great freshness and balance. Perfect acidity and classic alcohol levels make 2023 an ideal vintage in its early years, but also one built for ageing.
The wines of the 2023 vintage are silky, with fine, well-integrated tannins. Elegance and complexity are the watchwords of this highly successful vintage!
As always, the wines can be enjoyed young for those who appreciate the fruit and power of great Bordeaux wines.
The Merlot-dominated Second Wines will be accessible and almost ready to drink on delivery.
As for the Premiers grands vins, they should of course be forgotten on delivery from September 2026.
However, tasted young and decanted in advance, bottles from this 2023 vintage will always be memorable.
For red wines, Bordeaux in this 2023 vintage has produced wines of remarkable balance which, thanks to perfect acidity, will last for decades without ever faltering!
The Merlots are generally colorful, fruity and free of over-ripeness aromas. Their taste faithfully reflects the terroir from which they come: structured and sometimes strict on the gravelly soils, more generous and full-bodied on the clays, bright and saline on the clay-limestone soils.
The style of Cabernets also varies greatly depending on the choices made, and in particular the date of harvest, showing off the patience of the winemakers:
For the dry white wines, freshness expresses itself. The wines are fine, lively and elegant, and the cool September nights and low summer sunshine have created the perfect conditions for Bordeaux white wines!
For sweet wines, the Châteaux had to wait until the first signs of Botrytis appeared late in mid-September. In Sauternes as in Barsac, 2023 bears the signature of great vintages: power and aromatic complexity.
Despite intense pressure of Mildiou in the southern Médoc, the wines as a whole were a great success. The terroirs of Margaux were able to express the finesse of the vintage with singularity.
Château Margaux has produced an immense vintage, described by some as “the wine of the vintage”. We particularly appreciated the wines from Châteaux Brane Cantenac, Rauzan Ségla, Giscours, Issan and Durfort Vivens.
The terroir of the Saint Julien crus produced magnificent wines in 2023, and the late ripening was perfectly managed by the estates.
While Château Léoville Las Cases is once again one of the wines of the vintage (98/100 Suckling and Quarin), the wines from Beychevelle, Branaire Ducru, Lagrange and Léoville Poyferré are among the best of our tasting. Wines from the Barton family (Langoa Barton and Léoville Barton) are also among the vintage's finest successes.
More protected from the vagaries of climate and mildew, the Pauillac appellation is producing a number of exceptional vintages in 2023. The wines are of rare complexity, with fine, well-integrated tannins and perfect acidity.
Of course, the 1er Crus Classés, Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Latour and Château Mouton Rothschild produced immense vintages, but we particularly appreciated Châteaux Pontet Canet, undeniably in the top 10 of this vintage, Lynch Bages, Pichon Comtesse and Pichon Baron. Special mention for the 2023 vintage of Châteaux Pedeclaux and Haut Bages Libéral.
Even further north, increasingly clement weather conditions have produced a grandiose vintage in Saint-Estèphe. The power here is once again grandiose.
While Château Montrose places its 2023 in the top 3 (see top 1) in Bordeaux this year, the wines of Château Calon Ségur and Château Cos d'Estournel are once again great successes.
Their 2nd wines (Dame de Montrose and Padoges de Cos) represent the best value for money in the 2023 vintage. Château Phélan Ségur gives birth to one of its finest vintages!
Great terroirs! On the Saint-Émilion plateau, here are the highlights of the 2023 vintage.
Among the most sought-after wines, there's no doubt: Château Canon, Clos Fourtet, Château La Gaffelière and Pavie Macquin.
The historic 1er Crus Classés and those from the 2012 and 2022 classifications are all nuggets. From Cheval Blanc to Ausone, Angelus, Pavie and Figeac, they all produce remarkable wines in which Merlot expresses itself to perfection!
The vintages of the Pomerol plateau are immense, and the wines are of a rare intensity.
While Petrus and Le Pin are obviously among the outstanding wines of the vintage, we were impressed by the vintages of Châteaux Gazin, La Conseillante and Nénin.
Much less spared by mildew than the Médoc, the Crus of Pessac Léognan have managed to cope with the vagaries of the climate and produce remarkable wines, especially the whites, where tension and freshness are perfect.
Our favorite is Château les Carmes Haut-Brion 2023, whose Cabernet Franc once again produces one of the finest wines in the world, under the direction of Guillaume Pouthier.
Other red and white favorites include Domaine de Chevalier, Château Smith Haut Lafitte, Château Haut Bailly.
2023 is a vintage blessed by Botrytis. In Sauternes, as in Barsac, all the wines are successful, and 2023 will be remembered as a magical vintage.
