HISTORY OF domaine jean-michel gérin
The Jean-Michel Gerin estate was founded in 1983 with the purchase of a parcel in Côte-Rôtie, marking the beginning of its history. Four years later, in 1987, the first vintage was produced when Jean-Michel took over the family vineyard from his grandfather Marcel Gerin and his father Alfred Gerin.
In 1988, the Domaine's story continued with the first vinification of the "Les Grandes Places", followed by "La Landonne" in 1996. In the early 90's, the need to build a new winery and a new cellar became apparent. Consequently, construction began immediately and was completed by the end of the year. Later in 2000, the construction of a bottle storage area was undertaken to meet the needs of the estate.
In 2002, a new adventure began for Jean-Michel Gerin, in collaboration with two winemaker friends, Pierre Fischer (Château Revelette, Aix-en-Provence) and Laurent Combier (Clos des grives, Crozes-Hermitage). The trio settled in the Spanish region of Priorat, located 100 kilometers south of Barcelona. The traditional grape varieties of Grenache and Carignan, present in these century-old vineyards, give a typical expression of this terroir. The vineyard has an area of 6 hectares of vines composed of a small percentage of Syrah, located between 300 and 500 meters of altitude.
In 2003, work began on the planting of the "La Viaillère" vineyard on Côte-Rôtie land. It was a huge work done on slopes ranging from 40% to almost 60%. The 2009 vintage will unveil the marketing of the first bottles of this exceptional lieu-dit.
domaine jean-michel, THE PROPERTY
For six generations, the Gérin family has been anchored in the heart of the Côte-Rôtie vineyards, in the village of Ampuis, about 30 km south of Lyon. This vineyard is located in the northernmost appellation of the Rhone Valley but also the smallest of the region, covering only about 320 hectares.
The terroir of this estate is unique, with a graniticsoil that is perfectly suited to growing Syrah, the main grape variety used to produce their red wines. This granitic soil, also known as "terroir de l'arène granitique", is made up of rolledpebbles and sand, which allows for excellent drainage and water retention for the vine roots. The warm, dryclimate of the region also allows for optimal ripening of the grapes, resulting in rich, concentrated wines.
The estate also produces white wines made from Viognier, Roussanne and Marsanne, which are grown on clay-limestone soils in the surrounding hills. These soils bring a mineral richness and aromatic complexity to the white wines.
Michaël and Alexis, the family's two sons, will continue to take on challenges, particularly in viticulture, where the Gérin family's estate now covers nearly 17 hectares in the Rhone Valley. In 2020, they decided to convert to organic farming, a new challenge to which the estate is committed.
the know-how of domaine jean-michel gérin
The unique know-how of Domaine Jean-Michel Gerin is based on a combination of age-old traditions and modern viticulture and vinification techniques. The estate implements environmentally friendly practices, such as organic vine growing, to produce superior-quality grapes.
Their artisanal approach is reflected in the way they work each vineyard plot, adjusting viticultural practices to the unique nature of the soil as well as the weather conditions. For example, the family farm does green harvesting to limit the number of grapes per vine and thus obtain berries that are more concentrated in flavour and aroma.
As for the vinification, Domaine Gérin uses modern techniques to preserve the quality of the grapes. The grapes are sorted by hand before being destemmed and fermented in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures to preserve the aromas and freshness of the fruit.
The wines are aged in oak barrels for 18 to 24 months for red wines and 8 to 12 months for white wines. During this time, the wines are regularly checked by their oenologist in order to guarantee constant quality.
The principales cuvées of Domaine Jean-Michel Gérin
The Domaine Jean-Michel Gérin is one of the most prestigious vineyards in the Rhone Valley and produces a wide variety of wines, mainly red wines made from Syrah and white wines made from Viognier and Roussanne. Among the main vintages of the Domaine Jean-Michel Gérin, we can mention :
The cuvée "Les Grandes Places", is a red wine produced from Syrah vines located on a very specific plot. This cuvée is considered as one of the most prestigious in the domain, with a great aromatic richness and a long finish in the mouth.
The cuvée "Champin le Seigneur" produced in the Côte-Rôtie appellation is made from vines of an average age of 30 years from 11 southeast-facing parcels. After 22 months of ageing, this wine offers a unique taste experience with a combination of fruity and spicy notes. With an ageing potential of 10 years, this wine is accessible today but can be kept to be enjoyed in the future.
"La Champine" is a famous white wine produced by Jean-Michel Gérin from Viognier and Roussanne. This wine is more complex with more richness and offers a nice freshness with notes of white flesh fruits and a mineral finish.
