Château Coutet
Château Coutet: The Timeless Elegance of Great Sauternes Wines
A Premier Grand Cru rooted in history and terroir
Château Coutet, a Premier Grand Cru Classé since 1855, stands as one of the great icons of the Sauternes region. Nestled near the Ciron River, the estate benefits from morning mists that create the perfect environment for the development of noble rot (Botrytis cinerea). Combined with clay-limestone soils, this unique climate results in wines with remarkable richness, depth and aromatic complexity.
The 38.5-hectare vineyard is predominantly planted with Sémillon (75%)—which brings roundness and structure—complemented by Sauvignon Blanc (23%) for freshness, and Muscadelle (2%) for floral notes. With an average vine age of 35 years, the grapes yield intense and balanced juice. Harvesting is done entirely by hand in several passes to pick only the botrytized berries at their peak. After gentle pressing, fermentation and aging take place in oak barrels, enhancing the wine’s structure and flavors of vanilla, honey, and spice.
Tasting pleasure and refined pairings
On tasting, Château Coutet reveals a vibrant golden color that deepens with age. The nose bursts with aromas of white flowers, citrus peel, honey, and dried fruits. The palate is lush yet fresh, delivering a long, complex finish that evolves beautifully over time. This wine is a true expression of balance between sweetness and vivacity.
Perfect for fine dining, it pairs wonderfully with pan-seared foie gras, sweet-and-savory cuisine, and fruit-based desserts such as tropical pavlovas or apricot tarts. It also shines with blue cheeses, enhancing both saltiness and creaminess. Served at 10-12°C, it can also be enjoyed alone as a contemplative wine experience.
The 2022 vintage is shaping up to be a highlight. With excellent ripeness and balanced acidity, it delivers vibrant flavors of exotic fruits, citrus, and honey, promising long-term aging potential and immediate charm.
Now available at 12bouteilles, Château Coutet represents an exceptional opportunity to discover the finesse and depth of world-class sweet wines.
