Château Ducru-Beaucaillou, a 245-hectare estate including 75 hectares of vines, is a benchmark in the Saint-Julien appellation. Grand Cru Classé in 1855, it boasts an exceptional stony terroir, giving its name to the château and enabling it to produce emblematic, structured and powerful wines with long ageing potential.

château ducru-beaucaillou, 300 years of inspiration
The history of Château Ducru-Beaucaillou goes back to the 13th century, but it was only after the French Revolution that it really took off. In 1795, the Ducru family acquired the estate. Bertrand Ducru added his surname to the château's name and decided to undertake major renovations, with the help of architect Paul Abadie. He made a number of modifications to the residence, and restored the vineyard and winery buildings. These investments led to the expansion of the estate, the transformation of the house into an elegant chartreuse overlooking the estuary, and its classification as a Grand Cru in 1855.
1866 marked a new turning point for Château Ducru-Beaucaillou, with its acquisition by Nathaniel Johnston. He surrounded himself with a team of experts to bring a modern touch to the estate. A few years later, with the help of Ernest David and Alexis Millardet, he developed the famous “Bordeaux mixture”. This preparation was highly effective against the mildew that infested French vineyards.
The estate then passed into the hands of the Desbarats merchants, before becoming the property of the Borie family. Today, the third generation of the family, Bruno Borie, is continuing the work of his predecessors and raising the château to its highest level.
a terroir of “beautiful pebbles
Château Ducru-Beaucaillou, a 245-hectare estate including 75 hectares of vines, is located in Saint-Julien on an extraordinary stony terroir of Günzian gravel with poor soils. This allows the vines to draw the nutrients they need from deep in the soil. During the summer, the pebbles retain the heat of the day, returning it to the vines at night to help ripen the grapes.
The estate also enjoys the privilege of being located close to the estuary. This large body of water has the advantage of easing winter rigors, moderating summer heatwaves and deflecting hail trajectories, helping the vineyards to develop and produce great wines.

In the vineyard, procedures are designed to respect the environment. Herbicides are no longer used in favor of mechanical weeding and well-considered grass cover, while insecticides are replaced by pheromones and chemical fertilizers by manure. This truly integrated approach to viticulture enabled the vineyard to acquire ISO 14001 certification in 2016, as well as level three certification for High Environmental Value.
During the harvest, fifty men and women harvest the grapes by hand with the utmost care. The bunches are first selected in the vineyard, then optically sorted on arrival in the vat room. Vinification then takes place in oak and stainless steel vats, allowing the identity of each plot to be expressed in the blends. After vinification, each batch is tasted several times by oenologist Éric Boissenot and his team. Finally, the wine is aged for 18 months in new French oak barrels.

Château Ducru-Beaucaillou (see Primeurs 2022) comes from an exceptional terroir and a multicultural, united team, enabling the creation of this Grand Vin. It has a beautiful initial taste, slightly fruity, a voluptuous fullness, silky tannins, and a finish of exceptional persistence. It also has a very good aging potential.
The second wine of the estate is La Croix Ducru-Beaucaillou. An original expression of the property's terroirs, this wine is dominated by cabernet sauvignon, complemented by merlot and a slightly spicy touch of petit verdot. It is aged for 12 months in barrels, two-thirds of which are new oak. It is both powerful, silky, and aromatic.
From the vineyards of Saint-Julien on the estate, this newcomer, named Le Petit Ducru de Ducru-Beaucaillou, is a balanced and harmonious wine. Accessible from its youth, this wine has a fine structure combined with real power.
