Château Lafon-Rochet, owned by the Lorenzetti family since 2021, is today a jewel of the Saint Estèphe appellation. Thanks to the family's sustained efforts and investments over more than 55 years, it rivals the prestigious Châteaux Lafite Rothschild and Cos d'Estournel. Château Lafon-Rochet offers a wine that is both simple and complex, highlighting the black fruit aromas characteristic of Saint Estèphe, with a subtle sweetness derived from the Merlot grape. Its second wine, Les Pèlerins de Lafon Rochet, is more accessible and easy to drink, ideal for initiation before savouring the grand vin.

the history of château lafon-rochet
The history of Château Lafon-Rochet dates back to the 17th century, when the estate was known as "Domaine de Rochet". But it was in 1650 that the estate was renamed "Château Lafon-Rochet" on the occasion of its owner's marriage to Etienne de Lafon.
Since 1880, Lafon-Rochet has enjoyed two centuries of winegrowing history, during which its vineyards have continued to grow and improve. This evolution culminated in major recognition at the 1855 Exposition Universelle in Paris, where the Grands Vins de Bordeaux were consecrated, and Lafon-Rochet was classified Fourth Grand Cru.
In 1960, the estate passed into the hands of Guy Tesseron. This passionate visionary undertook a complete restructuring of the vineyard and built a new château, the previous one having been destroyed by fire. In 1999, his son Michel Tesseron took over and undertook major investments to modernize the facilities and improve winemaking techniques. Basile Tesseron, the third generation of the family, takes over the reins of Château Lafon-Rochet. He adds two new cellars to the estate, one in stainless steel and the other in concrete, improving the quality of the wines.
At the end of 2021, the Lorenzetti family became owners of Château Lafon-Rochet, marking the creation of Vignobles Cruse-Lorenzetti. This new entity includes Château d'Issan, Château Pédesclaux and Château Lilian Ladouys. Lafon-Rochet is currently managed by Christophe Congé, in collaboration with Emmanuel Crus, and enjoys a solid reputation with wines appreciated by Bordeaux enthusiasts the world over.
Château lafon-rochet, the property
Located in the Saint-Estèphe appellation, on the left bank of the Gironde, the Lafon-Rochet terroir benefits from an ideal combination of geological, climatic and geographical factors.
The estate's 45 hectares of vineyards cover two Saint-Estèphe hilltops. On one side are gravelly soils, which are well-drained, and beneficial for vine-growing as they avoid excess water and encourage deep root development. The Lafon-Rochet terroir is also marked by the presence of clay and limestone, which add complexity to the wines. Clay helps retain water and nutrients, while limestone contributes to acidity regulation and wine structure.
The region's climate is oceanic, with maritime influences from the Gironde estuary. This means hot, sunny summers, but also mild, wet winters. This climatic combination enables the grapes to ripen slowly and progressively, favouring the accumulation of aromas and phenolic compounds.
In terms of grape varieties, Château Lafon-Rochet is mainly planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, which accounts for around 55% of the total. This variety thrives in this terroir, producing grapes rich in tannin and concentration. Merlot represents around 40% of the vineyard, bringing a certain roundness and fruity aromas to the wines. Cabernet Franc (3%) and Petit Verdot (2%) round out the rest of the grape varieties, adding complexity and nuance to the blends.
THE know-how of château lafon-rochet
It all starts with the Château Lafon-Rochet vineyard, which covers 45 hectares. Grapes are meticulously selected by hand, ensuring that only the ripest, healthiest grapes are harvested. This rigor continues at the sorting stage, where each bunch is carefully examined to keep only the best.
Vinification is traditional and parcel-based, with gentle extractions lasting around 3 weeks. Each plot is vinified separately, allowing the unique characteristics of each terroir to express themselves. This approach allows the winemaker to fine-tune the final blend according to the characteristics of each wine.
Fermentation is an art that Château Lafon-Rochet masters with precision. Fermentation conditions are rigorously controlled, extracting the full aromatic and structural potential of the grapes.
The wines are aged in oak barrels for 12 to 14 months. The winemaker carefully selects the barrels to bring subtle nuances to the wine, adding complexity and depth to the aromas and structure.
Château Lafon-Rochet skilfully combines tradition and innovation. While respecting traditional methods, the estate incorporates the latest technological advances to enhance the quality and expression of its wines.
the cuvées of château lafon-rochet
Château Lafon-Rochet is the estate's grand vin. This wine is a blend of the vineyard's different grape varieties, with a predominance of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot from older vines and higher plots. It is renowned for its power, robust tannic structure and ageing potential. It offers complex aromas of black fruit, cassis, spices and liquorice, with an elegance that develops over time.
Les Pèlerins de Lafon-Rochet is the estate's second wine, created to offer a more accessible approach to Lafon-Rochet wines. Les Pèlerins is also a varietal blend, with a slightly different proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot than the Grand Vin. It is vinified and aged with the same attention to detail but can be enjoyed younger, offering fruity aromas and a softer structure.
