Marqués de Riscal: Spanish excellence between heritage, innovation and architectural boldness

A legendary legacy rooted in Rioja

Established in 1858 in Elciego, within the prestigious Rioja Alavesa region, Marqués de Riscal is one of the oldest wineries in Spain. From the start, the estate distinguished itself with a pioneering spirit. In 1862, it became the first to bottle wines under the Rioja appellation, marking a defining moment in Spanish wine history and setting a standard of innovation and quality.

Throughout its history, Marqués de Riscal has preserved its traditional expertise while embracing modern winemaking techniques. In 1895, it became the first non-French wine to receive the Honor Diploma at the Bordeaux Exhibition, an international recognition that paved the way for its global expansion.

The winery also contributed to diversification in Spanish viticulture. In the 1970s, it introduced white grape varieties in the Rueda region, which ultimately led to the creation of the Rueda Designation of Origin in 1980. This move solidified Marqués de Riscal’s status as an innovator in the Spanish wine industry.

The City of Wine: an immersive blend of wine and architecture

In 2006, Marqués de Riscal launched the "City of Wine" – an extraordinary wine tourism complex. The site includes a five-star hotel designed by the iconic Frank Gehry, a wine spa, two gourmet restaurants, a museum, a historic cellar, and conference facilities. This visionary project reflects the estate's ambition to elevate wine tasting into a holistic lifestyle experience.

The hotel’s stunning architecture, with its flowing curves and metallic hues, has become a global icon that embodies the meeting point between viticultural tradition and avant-garde design. It attracts wine lovers, art enthusiasts, and travelers from around the world who seek an immersive experience in the world of Marqués de Riscal.

In both 2023 and 2024, the estate was awarded "Best Vineyard in Europe" and "Best Vineyard in the World", a testament to its unwavering pursuit of excellence in wine, hospitality, and sustainability.
