THE HISTORY OF THE
DOMAINE THOMAS MOREY
Domaine Thomas Morey is located in Chassagne-Montrachet and was founded by Thomas Morey and his wife Sylvie. The estate came into being in 2006, marking the start of a new adventure in the life of this young winemaker. Thomas Morey, who represents the tenth generation of the Morey family in this village, wanted to take off on his own after working for twelve years on the family estate.
In the same street as Domaine Thomas Morey in Côtes de Beaune, there are two other estates that also bear the Morey surname. Since its creation in 2007, Thomas has built up an excellent reputation over the years.
Since the 17th century, the Morey family has been closely linked to the winegrowing tradition of Chassagne. Claude Morey, originally from Paris-l'Hôpital, a small commune near Chassagne-Montrachet, settled in the village in 1643, laying the foundations for a long family history in the wine business.
For a long time, Thomas and his descendants worked in the vineyards or as coopers, before gradually acquiring vineyards and plots of land. It wasn't until the end of the 19th century that winegrowing became their core business. After working with Thomas's father Bernard and Thomas's brother Vincent for a number of years, Thomas and Sylvie decided to set up their own winery.
Thomas had the opportunity to take over a large number of plots from his family, planted in the 1950s and 1960s. After taking over the estate in 2006, his first vintage was produced in 2007.
In 2011, Thomas and Sylvie shared the same conviction: they wanted to run their wine estate using their grandparents' traditional methods. The main aim was to avoid the use of herbicides, pesticides and artificial fertilisers altogether. Three years later, in 2014, they put this desire into practice by adopting these practices and finally obtained organic certification in 2017.

AND ITS TERROIRS
The terroirs of Domaine Thomas Morey are located in Chassagne-Montrachet, in the Côte d'Or region of Burgundy. This major wine-growing region, within the Côte de Beaune, is characterised by a variety of climates, with brown clay-limestone soils dotted with pebbles. With a total surface area of 12.5 hectares, the estate is mainly made up of two-thirds plots dedicated to the Chardonnay grape variety and one-third to Pinot Noir. In addition to Chassagne-Montrachet, the Domaine Thomas Morey also covers the terroirs of Maranges, Santenay, Saint-Aubin, Puligny-Montrachet, Beaune, etc.
Domaine Thomas Morey cultivates its vines organically. The plots of Chardonnay are designated early in order to preserve the acidity of the fruit. Located in the heart of the famous Côte de Beaune, in the commune of Chassagne-Montrachet, the estate covers around 12 hectares. Thomas Morey produces red and white wines of exceptional quality, made from prestigious grape varieties such as Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
The estate produces three Premiers Crus in its range of red wines. These are Maranges La Fuissière, Santenay Clos Rousseau and Beaune Les Grèves. They are joined by a Santenanay Vielles vignes, a Chassagne-Montrachet and a Bourgogne Pinot Noir.
This vineyard is also renowned for its production of white wine, particularly Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru. In the Chassagne-Montrachet region, the estate also produces several Premiers Crus, including Les Baudines, Les Embrazées, Morgeot, Vide Bourse, Les Chenevottes and Les Dents de Chien. Complementing this selection are a Chassagne-Montrachet and a Saint Aubin Village. In the Burgundy appellation category, the estate offers an Aligoté and a Chardonnay.
From vine to cellar
Domaine Thomas Morey uses organic farming methods to grow its vines. The Chardonnay plots are harvested early to preserve the acidity of the raisins. The wines ferment naturally, without the addition of yeast.
The red wines are not filtered, thus preserving their natural character. As for the white wines, the Chardonnays are matured on very fine lees in traditional barrels and 350-litre casks, with an extended stay in vats before being bottled after 16 to 18 months of maturing.
The Pinots Noirs, vinified using a minimalist, traditional approach, are matured in 228-litre barrels, then undergo an extended period of ageing in vats before being bottled. This process lasts 15 months and no fining or filtration is carried out, thus preserving the wine's authenticity.
In the cellar, the winemaker's approach is surprisingly different from that of his predecessors. He favours gentle vinification and opts for ageing without using barrels that are too marked by wood. His range, comprising more than twenty cuvées, comes from prestigious appellations, each rivalling the other in renown.
Thomas has deliberately abandoned the traditionally woody style of the wines produced by his father. Drawing inspiration from the wines of Domaine Jean-Marc Roulot, he is part of a new generation of winemakers who favour elegance and finesse while maintaining sublime structure in their wines.
THE GREAT WINE OF DOMAINE THOMAS MOREY
Domaine Thomas Morey is renowned for its expertise and the unique quality of its wines, which reflect the exceptional terroir of Burgundy. These wines offer an exceptional taste experience and are much appreciated by wine lovers the world over.
Among them is Chassagne Montrachet, a sublime white wine produced by the estate. This cuvée comes from a single parcel of vines located in the "Houillères" area at the northern end of the village, close to the first vineyards of Puligny-Montrachet. The soils in this parcel are predominantly red clay-limestone.
Beaune 1 er Cru les Grèves Rouge is one of the estate's most prestigious wines. This remarkable cuvée is made from two parcels of Pinot Noir vines located near the village, on soils composed of clay and sand. In the heart of Beaune, Les Grèves is undoubtedly the greatest climate in the region. The wines produced here stand out for their richness, structure and ageing potential.
Santenay Vielles Vignes is a magnificent cuvée, made from raisins grown on limestone and stony soils. This parcel enjoys an exceptional exposure, just below the famous "Clos de Tavannes", one of Santenay's most famous premier crus.
