the history of château cos d'estournel
The history of Château Cos d'Estournel began in 1811 when Louis-Gaspard d'Estournel inherited some vines near the village of Cos. He decided to start winemaking and the success thanks to the quality of his wines allowed him to export far away like in India in the 1930s. Influenced by the culture of this country, he was nicknamed the "Maharajah of Saint-Estephe" and gave the estate the look of an Indian palace.
In 1852, Louis-Gaspard d'Estournel had to sell the estate under the weight of his debts. He died one year later and two years before the 1855 classification which elevated the château to the rank of Second Cru Classé of Saint-Estèphe. The Château passed from hand to hand throughout the 19th century.
In 1917, the famous merchant Fernand Ginestet bought the estate. Together with the Prats family, they kept it in good condition despite difficult times.
The estate was finally sold in the 2000s to Michel Reybier, an industrialist in the food industry (Aoste ham, Cochonou, Justin Bridou) and in the luxury hotel business (La Réserve). Very attached to the search for excellence and ecology, he works under the sign of loyalty and universality, values of the founder of Cos d'Estournel.
château cos d'estournel, the property
Château Cos d'Estournel is located in the south of the Saint-Estèphe appellation in the north of the Médoc, between the Gironde estuary and the Atlantic Ocean. Its vineyard spread over 91 hectares. It benefits from a maritime climate that protects the vines from extreme weather conditions.
The château's vineyard is made up of 61 plots on a plateau of deep gravel, from which two slopes decline: one facing East and the other South on a clay-gravel soil. This geographical and geological configuration offers an incredible combination of soils and exposures which allows a great diversity of terroirs. The style of Cos d'Estournel fully expresses the richness of this variety, revealing itself as one of the most renowned wines in the world.
According to a research carried out in 2001, a map was established highlighting nearly 20 different soil types. This knowledge is essential insofar as the diversity of the soils influences the behavior of the vine, bringing a remarkable complexity to the wines.
CHÂTEAU COS D'ESTOURNEL, AN inimitable style
Located in the north of the Médoc, Château Cos d'Estournel does not go unnoticed. Built in the early 1830's, the château is deeply inspired by the oriental architecture of Louis-Gaspard d'Estournel's taste for India. The property has a series of monumental pagodas, statues of elephants and a spectacular carved wooden entrance door from the palace of the Sultan of Zanzibar.
The main building is entirely dedicated to wine and houses the winery in a modern facility designed to provide the best conditions for wine making and storage. It was completely renovated in 2008 according to the most avant-garde techniques as well as in respect of the environment in order to sublimate the heritage, inscribing the estate in the modernity but also maximizing the energy savings.
CHÂTEAU COS D'ESTOURNEL FROM THE VINEYARD to the bottle
Benefiting from an exceptional terroir, the vinifications at the château are adapted to the character of the harvest, privileging the expression of the terroir. Moreover, the ageing in new oak barrels allows to enrich the aromas and the flavours of the wine by a fine woodiness.
The Grand Vin of Château Cos d'Estournel is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot with a virile elegance, combining power and smoothness. Young, it is defined by the intensity of its structure and the brightness of its fruit. When fully mature, it presents a beautiful melting and an aromatic complexity mixed with spices.
