Second Grand Cru Classé 1855 – Saint-Estèphe

An exceptional terroir on the banks of the Gironde

Located north of Pauillac, in the Saint-Estèphe appellation, Château Montrose boasts a single-block 95-hectare vineyard and was classified as a Second Grand Cru in 1855. Its vines grow on two elite Médoc terraces (T3 & T4), shaped by the Gironde estuary, which provides ideal drainage, ventilation, and a natural microclimate – the key to its powerful, age-worthy and refined wines.

A preserved viticultural heritage

Currently in organic conversion and transitioning towards regenerative farming, Château Montrose promotes biodiversity, improves soil health, and reduces its carbon footprint through sustainable innovations like geothermal energy and photovoltaic panels.

Precision winemaking

Montrose applies a meticulous micro-parcel approach. Each plot is vinified separately to highlight the character of its unique climate. Gentle extractions and masterful blending give rise to wines that reflect the estate’s true identity.

The wines of Château Montrose

🏰 Château Montrose
The Grand Vin is sourced from the historic Terrace 4 and is Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant. It is aged 18 months in French oak barrels (60% new).
Typical blend: 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc.

🌹 La Dame de Montrose
Created in 1983 in tribute to Yvonne Charmolüe, this second wine is Merlot-driven with soft tannins and red fruit aromas. Aged 12 months (1/3 new oak).
Typical blend: 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc, 5% Petit Verdot.

🌱 Tertio de Montrose
The third wine, made from younger vines, offers an accessible, vibrant expression of the Montrose style without compromising quality.

A story of legacy and vision

Founded in 1815 by Étienne Théodore Dumoulin, Montrose quickly rose to prominence. In 1866, industrialist Mathieu Dollfus modernized the estate and built a self-sufficient village for workers. The Charmolüe family carried the torch for over a century.

Since 2006, Martin and Olivier Bouygues, and now Charlotte Bouygues and Pierre Graffeuille, since 2022, have led the château into the 21st century with a forward-looking, eco-conscious transformation – all while staying true to its deep-rooted legacy.
