Château Montrose the youngest Second Growth of 1855, spreads over 95 hectares in a single block facing the Gironde, in Saint-Estèphe. La Dame de Montrose, created in 1983, pays tribute to Yvonne Charmolüe, who ran the estate alone after her husband's death. Drawn from a second selection led by Merlot, on the clay-limestone soils of Terrace No. 5, it draws its character from the estate's cool terroirs: an alloy of grace and vigour.
According to the estate, the 2016 winter was mild and the spring rainy, with a few hailstorms at the end of June. A very hot summer and a warm, dry autumn brought the grapes to full ripeness. The vintage produced Médoc wines that are both dense and fresh, with ripe tannins and preserved acidity. Vinified plot by plot, with gentle extractions and nine distinct press fractions, the 2016 Dame was aged for 12 months in French oak barrels, one third new.
Dense, deep colour. A complex, expressive and generous nose of ripe fruit and spice, opening towards violet with air. The palate is broad, round and complex, with fine tannins, well-ripened black fruit, liquorice and vanilla. A long, persistent finish.
La Dame de Montrose 2016 is entering its drinking window and will easily keep until 2038. Decant for an hour and serve at 16-17°C with roast rack of lamb, rib of beef or a mature cheese.

La Dame de Montrose 2016 is rated 93/100 by James Suckling, Jeb Dunnuck and Antonio Galloni (Vinous), 92/100 by Wine Advocate, and 17/20 from 12bouteilles. Antonio Galloni sees it as a second wine able to overachieve in this vintage. From a very hot summer followed by a dry autumn, the 2016 combines the roundness of Merlot (61%) with the backbone of Cabernet Sauvignon.
La Dame de Montrose 2016 can be enjoyed now and until 2038. Jancis Robinson places it between 2024 and 2039, William Kelley (Wine Advocate) between 2026 and 2046. Decant for an hour and serve at 16-17°C.
La Dame de Montrose 2016, at €55, is the more structured, more age-worthy vintage, from an exceptional year in the Médoc. The Dame de Montrose 2015, at €48.50, sunnier and more open, drinks a little earlier. See every vintage on our Château Montrose page.
Roast rack of lamb calls for a red with fine tannins and black fruit, fresh enough to cut through the fat. A Merlot-led Saint-Estèphe such as La Dame de Montrose 2016 is ideal, decanted for an hour and served at 16-17°C. It also suits grilled rib of beef or a mature cheese.
No. William Kelley (Wine Advocate) singled out the 2016 as the finest vintage in a vertical of La Dame de Montrose, saying there is "no rush" to open it, and sees it developing until 2046. Made from the same estate and in the same cellar as the grand vin, the 2016 Dame has the structure of a wine to cellar.
La Dame de Montrose 2016 is available at €55.00 per 75 cl bottle on 12bouteilles, price as of October 2026. The best price is by the case of 12: €605.00, or €50.42 per bottle. The wine is in stock and delivered within 10 days. Free delivery from €300 in France and from €750 elsewhere in Europe.
