In Saint-Estèphe, Château Phélan Ségur brings together 70 hectares of clay gravel, on slopes and plateaus next to Montrose and Calon Ségur. Its name joins Bernard O'Phelan, an Irish merchant who arrived in 1805, and the old Ségur de Cabanac estate, bought in 1810. Philippe Van de Vyvere has owned it since 2017; Véronique Dausse runs the château and Michel Rolland advises.
2019: a heatwave summer, without water stress
According to the château, spring was cool from April to mid-June, with above-normal rainfall. Summer 2019 was marked by intense heat, storms and heatwaves, but without major water stress thanks to the clay gravels of Saint-Estèphe. At the start of picking, from 24 September to 10 October, the grapes were in perfect health. The wine is 14.5%.
Tasting
Deep red with violet glints. The very complex nose offers ripe fruit, cherry, blackcurrant and blackberry, with toasty, liquorice notes. The palate is fleshy in the middle and keeps a fresh finish; a generous vintage with exceptional tannic power, according to the château.

If you like young, fruit-driven wines, it is already drinking; otherwise we see it at its best from 2027 to 2042. Decant it for at least two hours and serve it at around 18 °C, with peppered beef fillet.
