Château de L'Ou: The Power of Catalan Terroir through Organic Excellence
A visionary estate rooted in the rich history of Roussillon
Located in Montescot, just south of Perpignan, Château de L'Ou draws its name from a now-vanished, egg-shaped spring once central to the region. “L’Ou” means “egg” in Catalan, symbolizing renewal and vitality. In 1998, Séverine and Philippe Bourrier took over the estate and immediately transitioned it to certified organic farming—an uncommon approach at the time in Roussillon.
Today, the estate spans 26 hectares, enriched by additional plots in Saint-Paul-de-Fenouillet, Caudiès-de-Fenouillèdes, and Maury. The diversity of soil types—rolled pebbles, red clay, limestone, and schist—creates a mosaic of terroirs. This variety allows for nuanced, expressive wines that truly reflect their origin.
From the beginning, the estate’s philosophy has been guided by authenticity and environmental respect. The winemaking process emphasizes minimal intervention, preserving the integrity of the fruit and the character of the land. The result: sincere wines that tell the story of their Mediterranean landscape with purity and depth.
Wines of character: purity, structure, and terroir
Château de L'Ou’s wines are born from meticulous vineyard work and a deep understanding of each parcel. Hand-harvested and vinified separately, the wines are crafted from Grenache, Syrah, and Carignan for the reds, and Vermentino and Chardonnay for the whites. The reds are powerful yet elegant, marked by black fruit, spices, and wild herbs. The whites show precision, freshness, and subtle citrus notes.
Among the estate’s flagship wines are the Château de L'Ou Rouge, rich and full-bodied; the Château de L’Ou Blanc, floral and mineral; and the “Secret de Schistes” cuvée, a high-end, barrel-aged wine offering structure and impressive aging potential. The rosé—crafted from Grenache—adds a fresh, lively touch to the range, perfect for warm days and light cuisine.
Every cuvée expresses a balance of tradition and innovation, guided by sustainable practices and a clear sense of place. The estate also welcomes visitors for immersive wine tourism experiences, including guided vineyard tours, cellar visits, and curated tastings.
