Perched on the slopes of Fronsac, Château La Vieille Cure boasts roots dating back to the 17th century, appearing on the famed Belleyme map. Passed through generations, the estate retained its artisanal spirit until its 1986 revival by American enthusiasts. They combined traditional winemaking wisdom with state-of-the-art equipment to reenergize its 8 hectares of vineyards.
The unique terroir—well-drained clay-limestone soils, southeast exposure, and carefully contoured plots—supports a planting of 75 % Merlot, 15 % Cabernet Franc, and 10 % Cabernet Sauvignon. Each vine is managed sustainably, with targeted leaf removal and green harvesting to enhance grape maturity and limit interventions.
Harvesting is 100 % by hand, parcel by parcel, ensuring optimal berry integrity. Grapes undergo a two-stage sorting process before 28 days of temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel tanks. The wine then matures 12–18 months in French oak barrels (30 % new), imparting structure and refined complexity.
Château La Vieille Cure delivers a rich, balanced wine with aromas of black fruit (blackcurrant, blackberry), complemented by spicy and tobacco accents. On the palate, silky tannins provide a sturdy framework without heaviness, while the terroir’s natural freshness brings harmony.
Ready to enjoy from 4 years in, it evolves gracefully for up to 12 years. The 2006 vintage impresses with depth and tertiary notes, whereas 2012 charms with vibrant fruit and accessibility.
This wine excels alongside gourmet dishes such as herb-crusted rib-eye, lamb tagine with apricots, or porcini risotto. For cheese pairings, opt for an aged Comté or Beaufort to match its tannic structure.
