Château Filhot: Nobility and Precision in Every Glass of Sauternes

An iconic estate shaped by a unique terroir

Classified as a Second Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux ranking, Château Filhot is one of the oldest and most prestigious wine estates in the Sauternes appellation. Founded in 1709, the vineyard stretches across 62 hectares of gravel, clay, and sandy soils set atop a limestone plateau. This rare soil composition, combined with the Garonne River's humid mornings and sunny afternoons, encourages the development of noble rot (Botrytis cinerea), the essential condition for crafting high-quality sweet wines.

The vineyard is primarily planted with Sémillon (60%), which provides depth and smoothness, along with Sauvignon Blanc (36%) for freshness and acidity, and Muscadelle (4%) to introduce delicate floral notes. Grapes are hand-harvested in multiple passes to ensure only the most botrytized berries are selected. This meticulous selection guarantees a concentration of sugars and flavors that forms the base of Château Filhot’s renowned wines.

Refined winemaking and aging for wines of rare elegance

Once pressed, the juice undergoes fermentation in oak barrels, allowing for the slow development of nuanced aromas such as tropical fruits, honey, vanilla, and white flowers. The wines are then aged for 18 to 24 months, resulting in harmonious, structured, and long-lasting cuvées. The estate’s hallmark is its balance between opulence and a refreshing mineral tension, driven by the calcareous soil.

Château Filhot wines are known for their ageing potential, with top vintages such as 2001, 2010, and 2016 showcasing their richness and evolution. A second wine, Château Pineau du Rey, offers a more approachable yet still high-quality alternative made from younger vines and select parcels.
