Nestled on the famed slopes of Saint-Émilion, Château Fombrauge is a true ambassador of Bordeaux's Right Bank elegance. Spanning 58 hectares, the vineyard boasts a unique blend of clay, limestone, and sandy soils, forming a terroir that yields wines of remarkable complexity. Promoted to Grand Cru Classé status in 2012, the estate continues to uphold the high standards of its classification.
The estate’s rich history is embodied in its majestic 17th-century chartreuse, a former Carthusian monastery, which adds a layer of charm and authenticity. This architectural heritage harmonizes with modern winemaking techniques, reflecting a deep respect for tradition and terroir.
Château Fombrauge’s vineyard is predominantly planted with merlot (95%) and complemented by cabernet franc (5%). This blend ensures a silky texture, soft tannins, and rich fruity aromas, making the wine both refined and approachable.
The estate’s red wines undergo meticulous vinification followed by 18 months of aging: 45% in new barrels, 45% in one-wine barrels, and 10% in modern concrete vats. This refined method maintains freshness while adding depth and complexity to the final blend.
Tasting reveals expressive red fruit notes like blackcurrant and cherry, with a round, velvety mouthfeel and a fresh, lingering finish. The wine’s balance makes it enjoyable young, while offering excellent aging potential—ideal for red meat dishes or aged cheeses.
In addition to its flagship reds, Château Fombrauge also produces a limited Bordeaux blanc, crisp and aromatic, revealing citrus and floral notes. It pairs beautifully with seafood, grilled fish, or fresh cheeses, and remains a hidden gem among Right Bank whites.
