Jean-Michel Gérin : Côte-Rôtie, Côte-Bodin 2021

Rhone Valley - Côte-Rôtie - Red Wine -

Domaine Jean-Michel Gérin and Côte-Bodin

Based in Ampuis for six generations, the Gérin family has deep roots in Côte-Rôtie. Jean-Michel Gérin established his estate in 1983 and was later joined by his sons Michaël and Alexis. Côte-Bodin is a 100% Syrah single-vineyard wine from a small 0.7-hectare south-facing hillside planted in 1987. Previously blended into Champin le Seigneur, the vineyard has been vinified separately since 2018, producing a deep and structured expression of Côte-Rôtie.

The 2021 vintage in Côte-Rôtie

2021 stands apart from the warmer vintages that preceded it. A cooler and more demanding growing season produced Northern Rhône Syrah with moderate alcohol, freshness, spice and aromatic definition. Côte-Bodin 2021 combines the vineyard’s natural structure with a particularly refined and energetic expression. Its freshness gives the wine length and supports slow development in bottle.

Tasting

Côte-Bodin 2021 displays black raspberry, cherry, violet and spice, complemented by peppery and mineral nuances. The palate is velvety and finely textured, combining dark and blue fruit with harmonious tannins and a long, fresh, spicy finish. Less fleshy than a warmer vintage, the 2021 stands out for its balance, precision and energy.

12bouteilles recommendation

Côte-Bodin 2021 is particularly appealing for lovers of fresh, precise Côte-Rôtie. The wine is beginning to enter its drinking window but still has considerable ageing potential. We favour 2028-2042 for a balance of fruit, complexity and development. Serve at around 16°C, with aeration when young, alongside roast pork or pigeon.

FAQ – Jean-Michel Gérin Côte-Rôtie Côte-Bodin 2021

How good is Jean-Michel Gérin Côte-Bodin 2021?

Jean-Michel Gérin Côte-Bodin 2021 received 93/100 from Wine Spectator. This cooler vintage gives a particularly precise expression of the vineyard, combining red and dark fruit with floral and spicy notes and fine tannins. The 2021 places greater emphasis on balance, tension and finesse than sheer power.

When should you drink Jean-Michel Gérin Côte-Bodin 2021?

Jean-Michel Gérin Côte-Bodin 2021 can be enjoyed now and has ageing potential into the mid-2040s. A published drinking window places its peak between 2031 and 2041 and recommends drinking it before 2045. Our preferred window is 2028-2042 for a balance of fruit and complexity. Serve at around 16°C and aerate when young.

Which vintage of Côte-Bodin should you choose in 2026?

Côte-Bodin 2021 is the best choice for freshness and early development, while 2023 and 2024 offer younger expressions. The 2021, rated 93/100 by Wine Spectator, is priced at €120.00. The 2023, also €120.00, is fleshier and more structured, while the €110.00 2024 shows a fresher, more tender profile.

What wine goes with roast pork?

Roast pork calls for a structured yet fresh red that can balance the richness and depth of the meat. Côte-Bodin 2021 is particularly well suited through its fine tannins, freshness and dark-fruit, spice and pepper character. Serve at around 16°C after aeration. Roast pigeon is another excellent pairing.

What is the difference between Côte-Bodin and La Viallière?

Côte-Bodin offers a more earthy and structured expression, while La Viallière places greater emphasis on finesse and verticality. Both wines are based on Syrah and vinified separately to express their individual terroirs. In 2021, the natural freshness of the vintage further refines Côte-Bodin’s structure and enhances its precision.
