Seña 2024 is one of Chile's benchmark fine wines. Created in 1995 by Eduardo Chadwick and Robert Mondavi, Seña was conceived with the ambition of producing a Chilean wine capable of standing alongside the world's finest. Bordeaux-inspired in its construction yet distinctly Chilean in identity, it combines Cabernet Sauvignon with varieties including Carmenère from a dedicated vineyard in the Aconcagua Valley. The 2024 is a particularly fresh, precise and elegant expression of Seña.
Colour: deep, intense and brilliant ruby red.
Nose: fresh blackberry, blackcurrant and dark fruit mingle with graphite, floral and herbal notes. Sweet mint, spice and a restrained hint of cigar box emerge with air.
Palate: deep yet never heavy, driven by exceptionally fine tannins and impressive tension. Fresh, juicy dark fruit is complemented by graphite-like minerality and refined herbal nuances. The finish is long, precise and persistent.
Seña 2024 is composed of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Malbec, 16% Carmenère and 6% Petit Verdot. It comes from the Seña vineyard in Ocoa, in the Aconcagua Valley, which is farmed according to biodynamic principles. Stony volcanic and colluvial soils, together with cooling influences from the Pacific and the Humboldt Current, help preserve freshness and fruit definition.
The season began with cool conditions and above-average rainfall. A particularly cool spring delayed flowering and ripening before warmer weather arrived towards the end of the season. Harvest was consequently later than usual, beginning on 5 April and continuing until 2 May for Carmenère. This extended ripening period is reflected in the wine's balance, combining concentration and maturity with freshness and aromatic precision.
Seña 2024 was matured for 18 months, with 70% in barrels and 30% in foudres. This is the highest proportion of large-format oak used for Seña to date and continues the stylistic evolution towards an expression in which oak sits increasingly behind the fruit, tannins and terroir.
Seña 2024 received 98/100 from James Suckling, 97+/100 from Wine Advocate and 96/100 from both Vinous and Jane Anson. Critics particularly highlight the wine's fine tannins, freshness, minerality and balance.
Serve Seña 2024 at around 16-18°C with rib of beef, roast lamb, duck breast or game. When young, around two hours of aeration will help open the bouquet and texture. It has excellent ageing potential, with Wine Advocate giving a drinking window of 2028-2044.
The 2024 is a Seña defined by precision rather than sheer power. The freshness of the vintage, exceptionally fine tannins and increased use of foudres give it a particularly focused and harmonious profile. It is an excellent choice for lovers of Cabernet-led fine wines seeking depth and ageing potential without excessive weight.

Both rank among Chile's leading Bordeaux-inspired wines, but they express different terroirs and styles. Seña comes from the Aconcagua Valley and combines Cabernet Sauvignon with significant proportions of Carmenère and Malbec. Almaviva is produced in Puente Alto in the Maipo Valley and generally offers an expression more firmly structured around Cabernet varieties. They are therefore best viewed as two different interpretations of Chilean fine wine rather than as a hierarchy of quality.
The blends are similar: the 2024 contains 18% Malbec and 16% Carmenère, compared with 19% and 15% respectively in 2023. The more meaningful difference is stylistic: the 2024 is particularly fresh, linear and precise, with exceptionally fine tannins. It also continues Seña's move towards greater use of large-format oak during maturation.
Choose Seña 2024 if you value freshness, tension, fine tannins and the distinctive character contributed by Carmenère. Almaviva will generally appeal more to drinkers looking for the depth and Cabernet-led structure associated with Puente Alto. At this level, the decision is primarily a question of preferred style rather than quality.
Seña is a multi-varietal blend built around Cabernet Sauvignon, whereas Viñedo Chadwick is much more exclusively focused on Cabernet Sauvignon and its Puente Alto terroir. Choose Seña for the complexity and distinctive character of a great Chilean blend; choose Viñedo Chadwick for Eduardo Chadwick's purest and most prestigious expression of Cabernet Sauvignon.
The comparison helps explain its original ambition and the architecture of its blend, but it does not fully define the wine today. Seña has developed a recognised identity of its own through its Aconcagua Valley vineyard, Pacific influence, biodynamic farming and the presence of Carmenère. It is better understood as a great Chilean wine informed by Bordeaux traditions than as an imitation of Bordeaux.
Its fine tannins make it possible to enjoy relatively young after generous aeration, but the 2024 clearly has the structure to develop in bottle. For a bottle purchased today, we would favour several years of cellaring, allowing its fruit, herbal, mineral and oak-derived elements to become even more integrated.
