Penfolds Grange 2022

South Australia - Red Wine -

Penfolds Grange 2022 is Penfolds' flagship wine and one of the historic benchmarks of Australian Shiraz. Created by Max Schubert with the experimental 1951 vintage, Grange follows a distinctive philosophy: selecting exceptional fruit from several South Australian regions to build a consistent house style rather than express a single vineyard. The 2022 combines 97% Shiraz and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon, delivering immense depth with remarkable composure.

Penfolds Grange 2022: tasting notes

Colour: extraordinarily deep and almost impenetrable, with subtle dark red hues at the rim.
Nose: intense and complex, led by black cherry, dark chocolate and bitter citrus reminiscent of Chinotto. Savoury notes of smoked meat, bay leaf, soot, iron and walnut follow, alongside the distinctive influence of new American oak.
Palate: expansive, dense and sumptuous, with impressive concentration held firmly in check. Dark fruit, chocolate and savoury flavours are framed by powerful yet polished tannins. The finish is exceptionally long, driven by the energy and depth that define Grange.

A blend of three major Australian regions

Grange 2022 draws its fruit from Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale and Coonawarra. This multi-regional approach is fundamental to Grange: Penfolds selects vineyards capable of contributing to the desired style each vintage rather than seeking the expression of a single region or vineyard.

The 2022 vintage

The 2022 growing season was generally cool and measured across South Australia. A cool, windy spring, including several hail events, reduced yields, particularly in Barossa Valley. Summer remained relatively mild without prolonged periods of extreme heat. Extended ripening and small berries produced concentrated yet precise wines, with firm tannin structure and notable freshness.

Winemaking and maturation

Grange 2022 was matured for 18 months in 100% new American oak hogsheads. Unlike St Henri, where oak is deliberately kept in the background, new American oak is an integral part of the Grange identity and complements its extraordinary concentration. The wine has 14.5% alcohol, a pH of 3.70 and total acidity of 6.9 g/L.

Critic scores

Grange 2022 received 100/100 from Decanter, 99/100 from Colin Hay and 98/100 from Erin Larkin, James Suckling and Jane Anson, confirming the exceptional quality of the vintage.

Food pairing, serving and cellaring

Pair with rib of beef, rack of lamb, game or slow-roasted meats. Serve at 16-18°C. When opened young, Grange 2022 benefits from extended aeration. Penfolds recommends a peak drinking window of 2028-2075.

12bouteilles recommendation

The 2022 has all the power expected of Grange, but the cooler vintage brings remarkable precision and control. This is a Grange built for decades of development: despite its impressive richness today, we would clearly favour cellaring. Patience will allow the complexity of this exceptional vintage to emerge fully.

FAQ – Penfolds Grange 2022

Why is Penfolds Grange considered an iconic Australian wine?

Grange occupies a unique place in Australian wine history. Created by Max Schubert beginning with the experimental 1951 vintage, it helped demonstrate that an Australian wine could achieve the complexity and longevity associated with the world's great fine wines. Grange is now officially recognised as a Heritage Icon of South Australia.

What is the difference between Penfolds Grange and St Henri?

The two wines represent almost opposite interpretations of great Shiraz at Penfolds. Grange combines immense concentration with maturation in new American oak, which is integral to its identity. St Henri matures in large seasoned oak vats, placing greater emphasis on fruit and the savoury character of Shiraz.

Is Penfolds Grange 2022 a Barossa Valley wine?

No, although Barossa Valley is an important component. Grange has historically been a multi-regional wine. The 2022 combines fruit from Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale and Coonawarra, with Penfolds selecting vineyards that fit the desired Grange style rather than seeking to express a single terroir.

Why does Grange contain Cabernet Sauvignon?

Shiraz remains overwhelmingly dominant in Grange, but Penfolds has historically included a small proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon when it contributes positively to the final blend. In 2022, Cabernet Sauvignon represents only 3% alongside 97% Shiraz, so Grange remains fundamentally a Shiraz-led wine.

Grange 2022 or St Henri 2023: which should you choose?

Choose Grange 2022 if you are looking for the pinnacle of the Penfolds range, exceptional concentration, the distinctive influence of new American oak and very long ageing potential. St Henri 2023 is the better choice if you prefer Shiraz with less overt oak influence and greater immediate emphasis on fruit, freshness and savoury complexity.

Should you buy Grange 2022 to drink now or to cellar?

Grange 2022 can be experienced young after extended aeration, but its potential strongly favours cellaring. Its structure and concentration are designed to develop over several decades. For those seeking the full complexity of mature Grange, patience is likely to be the more rewarding approach.
