Penfolds St Henri Shiraz 2023

South Australia - Red Wine -

Penfolds St Henri Shiraz 2023 is one of the most distinctive expressions of Australian Shiraz. Created in the 1950s and first commercially released in 1957, St Henri is defined by a choice that has become its signature: unlike Grange, it does not rely on new oak. The wine matures in large seasoned oak vats, allowing Shiraz, texture and bottle development to take centre stage.

Penfolds St Henri Shiraz 2023: tasting notes

Colour: very deep, almost black at the core, with a vivid purple rim.
Nose: black and blue fruits, dark spices and lightly roasted coffee lead into wet stone, iron and flinty notes. Oolong tea, fresh herbs and goji berry emerge with air.
Palate: juicy and generous, combining dark fruit with olive brine, fennel and liquorice. Tight, finely woven tannins shape a long, precise and fresh finish with the savoury character associated with St Henri.

A multi-regional Australian Shiraz

St Henri 2023 is made from Shiraz sourced from McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Frankland River, Port Lincoln and Padthaway. This multi-regional approach is central to the Penfolds identity: the aim is to build a consistent style and balance rather than express a single vineyard.

The 2023 vintage

The 2023 growing season was shaped by cool, wet La Niña conditions across southern Australia. High winter and spring rainfall, cool flowering conditions and a relatively mild summer extended ripening and delayed harvest. The result is a St Henri with considerable depth yet notable freshness and definition, its natural richness balanced by precise structure.

Winemaking and maturation

St Henri 2023 was matured for 12 months in large seasoned oak vats. The purpose is not to add overt oak flavour, but to allow the wine to develop while preserving the expression of Shiraz. It has 14.5% alcohol, a pH of 3.63 and total acidity of 6.9 g/L.

Critic scores

The 2023 vintage received 97/100 from Tyson Stelzer, Jeni Port, Dave Brookes and Nick Ryan, together with 96/100 from Erin Larkin and Huon Hooke.

Food pairing, serving and cellaring

Pair St Henri 2023 with rib of beef, roast lamb, duck breast, game or mushroom-based dishes. Serve at 16-18°C and allow one to two hours of aeration when young. Penfolds gives a drinking window from now to 2050.

12bouteilles recommendation

Choose St Henri to experience Shiraz through a very different philosophy from Grange: the oak recedes behind the fruit and texture. The 2023 is particularly compelling for its balance of depth, freshness and fine tannins. It can already be enjoyed after aeration, but several years in the cellar will reveal another dimension.

FAQ – Penfolds St Henri Shiraz 2023

What is the difference between Penfolds St Henri and Grange?

The fundamental difference lies in how the wines are conceived. Grange combines considerable concentration with maturation in new American oak, whereas St Henri matures in large seasoned oak vats that impart minimal oak character. Choose St Henri for a Shiraz driven by fruit and savoury complexity; choose Grange for a more powerful and monumental style.

What is the difference between St Henri and RWT Bin 798?

RWT Bin 798 is sourced exclusively from Barossa Valley and matured in French oak, whereas St Henri combines Shiraz from several regions and matures in large seasoned oak vats. RWT is generally more opulent and more influenced by oak; St Henri offers a more unadorned expression of Shiraz.

Does St Henri 2023 contain Cabernet Sauvignon?

Penfolds lists Shiraz for the 2023 vintage. A small proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon may be included in St Henri in some years, but Penfolds does not list Cabernet Sauvignon for the 2023. The blend of an earlier vintage should therefore not be applied to this wine.

St Henri 2023 or Grange 2022: which should you choose?

The two wines suit different preferences. Choose St Henri 2023 if you value Shiraz purity, freshness and discreet oak influence. Choose Grange 2022 if you are looking for greater concentration and power together with the distinctive influence of new American oak.

St Henri or RWT Bin 798: which should you choose?

Choose St Henri for its multi-regional character, unobtrusive maturation and savoury expression of Shiraz. Choose RWT Bin 798 if you specifically want a great Barossa Valley Shiraz with a more opulent profile shaped by French oak maturation.

Is St Henri a good alternative to Grange?

Yes, provided it is not viewed simply as a lesser version of Grange. St Henri has its own long-established identity within Penfolds. Its appeal lies precisely in offering an alternative vision of great Australian Shiraz, with less oak influence and greater emphasis on fruit, texture and evolution in bottle.
