Domaine Thomas Morey Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2024 is one of the great Chardonnays of the Côte de Beaune. Sourced from three tiny parcels on the Chassagne-Montrachet side of the Grand Cru, it combines the natural depth and power of Bâtard-Montrachet with Thomas Morey's characteristically precise, restrained style. The 2024 is particularly defined by tension, citrus, white flowers and a powerful mineral backbone. A remarkably young Grand Cru built for extended bottle ageing.
Colour: bright, youthful lemon yellow.
Nose: complex and relatively restrained at this stage, showing white flowers, rose petal, lilac, honeysuckle and acacia alongside green apple, candied citrus, spice and pure mineral notes.
Palate: dense and concentrated yet remarkably precise. The natural richness of the Grand Cru is carried by an intense mineral and citrus backbone that provides tension and freshness. Broad and silky in texture, it finishes powerful, youthful and exceptionally long.
Thomas Morey works approximately 0.19 hectare of Bâtard-Montrachet divided between three parcels on the Chassagne-Montrachet side. Two are owned by the domaine and the third is leased. Such a tiny vineyard area naturally results in extremely limited production and makes this one of the rarest wines in the Thomas Morey range.
Bâtard-Montrachet lies between Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet, immediately below Montrachet. Chardonnay traditionally produces deep, broad and powerful wines here. Thomas Morey's interpretation combines that richness with restraint: the 2024 has considerable substance, but a strong mineral backbone and citrus freshness provide remarkable energy and definition.
Thomas Morey's Chardonnays are traditionally vinified before being matured on very fine lees in standard barrels and 350-litre casks. Extended time in tank follows before bottling after approximately 16 to 18 months of total ageing. The approach is designed to integrate the wine and preserve precision rather than make oak a dominant aromatic feature.
The 2024 confirms the exceptional level of this wine. Burghound awarded it 95/100, while Jasper Morris rated it 93-96/100. Both highlight its concentration, intensity, freshness and exceptional length. Jasper Morris recommends waiting until around 2030 before entering its main drinking window.
Serve this Grand Cru at around 12-14°C in generous Burgundy glasses. Its depth calls for fine cuisine: roast lobster, langoustines, turbot, sole, scallops, Bresse chicken with morels or white-truffle risotto. The 2024 can be explored young with plenty of air, although its true potential lies in extended bottle ageing.
Despite its natural richness, this is not a showy Chardonnay designed for immediate drinking. The 2024 remains compact and tightly structured, with impressive mineral tension beneath its concentration. We would give it several years in the cellar, ideally towards the end of the decade, before opening a first bottle. It is one of the rarest and most ambitious wines produced by Thomas Morey.

Yes, although the 2024 is clearly built for ageing. Burghound describes its finish as still compact and youthful, while Jasper Morris suggests a drinking window beginning around 2030. A bottle opened today will therefore require more air and show a tighter, more primary expression than it should after several years in the cellar.
The domaine works only around 0.19 hectare divided between three small parcels on the Chassagne-Montrachet side of the Grand Cru. Production is consequently extremely limited. This compounds the natural rarity of Bâtard-Montrachet itself, one of Burgundy's most sought-after white Grand Crus.
The vineyards can be geographically very close, but Bâtard-Montrachet is classified Grand Cru and generally provides greater density, depth and ageing potential. Thomas Morey's Chassagne Premier Crus often highlight finesse and the individual character of each climat; Bâtard adds another level of concentration and length.
No. The domaine does use barrels and 350-litre casks for its Chardonnay, but oak is not intended to dominate the wine aromatically. Professional reviews of the 2024 focus instead on flowers, citrus, green apple, spice and minerality, together with exceptional concentration and tension.
If drinking it very young, some aeration is advisable, although we would favour opening the bottle in advance and allowing it to develop gradually in large glasses rather than aggressive decanting. At maturity, simply opening the bottle before the meal should be sufficient. Serve at around 12-14°C rather than too cold.
It has significant ageing potential. Jasper Morris suggests 2030-2036 as a drinking window, although well-stored Bâtard-Montrachet can evolve for considerably longer. For the 2024, we would favour opening the first bottle after several years of cellaring rather than drinking it immediately.
