In this 2022 vintage, Domaine Rostaing Côte-Rôtie “La Viaillère” is already emerging as one of the great wines from the Rostaing family in this prestigious northern appellation. Here is our tasting note:
The Color: a deep purple, almost opaque, reflecting the youth and concentration of Syrah.
The Nose: from the moment the bottle is opened, intense notes of ripe dark fruits, violets, pepper, and black olives come through—signature characteristics of Côte-Rôtie.
The Palate: medium-bodied in style, with superbly fine tannins and precise balance. Flavors develop on smoky and licorice nuances, foreshadowing an aging potential of 15 years or more.
This 2022 vintage from Domaine Rostaing comes from very old Syrah vines, planted by Pierre Rostaing’s grandfather in the famous “La Viaillère” plot. Aged between 18 and 22 months in 600-liter demi-muids (used for one to four previous vintages), the whole-cluster fermentation adds a floral touch and spicy complexity. This cuvée, which reappeared in 2016 after disappearing in 1996, shows a strong personality and will gain considerably in refinement over time.
Elegantly crafted, the Rostaing touch is fully expressed in this historical single-plot cuvée, once signed by Albert Dervieux—René’s father-in-law and Pierre’s grandfather. The meticulous work in the vineyard, combined with sustainable farming practices, results in a wine that marries power and finesse, typical of the great Côte-Rôtie terroirs.
The 12bouteilles Advice: An exceptional wine that deserves to be decanted for 2 hours before tasting to unveil its full aromatic range. It pairs beautifully with a piece of matured beef, game, or a hearty sauced dish. Allow it a few years in the cellar to fully appreciate its complexity!
