In this 2021 vintage, Mongeard-Mugneret’s Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru “Les Petits Monts” stands out as one of the finest wines of the prestigious Vosne-Romanée appellation in a very successful year. Here is our tasting note:
The Color: a deep ruby red, shimmering with purple highlights.
The Nose: complex and refined, revealing aromas of ripe fruits, peony, undergrowth, and humus, which evolve with aeration into delicate leather and smoky nuances.
The Palate: the subtle acidity highlights the fine, silky tannins. The attack is both direct and velvety, with a generous, harmonious texture that carries into a persistent, elegant finish. This is a very fine wine that should improve over 10 to 15 years.
This 2021 Mongeard-Mugneret is made from the single grape variety Pinot Noir (100%), drawn from vines around 50 years old. Hand-harvested with meticulous sorting, destemming is practiced depending on the vintage’s quality to preserve the integrity of the fruit. The careful and precise aging, 30% to 40% in new oak barrels, imparts complexity and structure without weighing the wine down.
Elegantly crafted, this Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru “Les Petits Monts” captivates with its finesse and subtlety. The brown limestone and rendzina soils, lighter in clay content, bestow discreet minerality and remarkable freshness, underscoring the floral and fruity aromas characteristic of this exceptional terroir.
The 12bouteilles Advice: A superb Cru from the Côte de Nuits. Decant it one to two hours before serving; it will pair beautifully with roasted or grilled meats, as well as game dishes. Its aging potential of at least 10 years will allow it to develop even greater complexity and depth in the cellar.
