Château de Fargues 1998

Bordeaux - Sauternes - 1er Cru Classé - Sweet wine -

Château de Fargues 1998 is an exceptional Sauternes from the historic Lur Saluces family estate, long-time custodians of Château d’Yquem. The 1998 vintage benefited from slow, steady botrytisation, producing a wine of great harmony, depth and longevity. Rich, complex and beautifully balanced, this is a benchmark dessert wine.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: deep golden colour with amber highlights.
Nose: intense aromas of apricot preserve, orange marmalade, mango, acacia honey, saffron, beeswax and fine spice.
Palate: opulent and silky with remarkable concentration. Layers of exotic fruit, candied citrus, vanilla and almond. The sweetness is perfectly integrated, leading to a long, elegant and fresh finish.

Terroir & Winemaking

Predominantly Sémillon with Sauvignon Blanc. Grapes are harvested in multiple passes to select only berries affected by noble rot. Slow fermentation, followed by extended aging in French oak barrels (a portion new) to build depth and complexity.

Food Pairings

Foie gras, roasted poultry, delicate Asian cuisine, sweet-spicy dishes, blue cheeses or fruit-based desserts. Serve at 50–54°F (10–12°C).

12bouteilles.com Recommendation

Château de Fargues 1998 is already magnificent but still capable of aging for 20 more years for those who appreciate saffron, caramelised and honeyed evolution.
