Ardbeg An Oa is a peated Islay single malt that offers a gentler, rounder expression of the iconic distillery—without sacrificing its smoky soul. Named after the Mull of Oa peninsula that shields Ardbeg from the Atlantic storms, this whisky is crafted through a unique vatting process in a "gathering vat" that blends Pedro Ximénez casks, toasted virgin oak, and ex-bourbon barrels.
Appearance: Deep amber gold with coppery highlights, showing a rich, slightly oily texture.
Nose: Seductive and layered. Billows of peat smoke lead into dark chocolate, warm honey, dried fruits, cigar box, and herbal undertones. With air, burnt caramel, liquorice, and faint citrus zest emerge, adding complexity.
Palate: Smooth and full-bodied. The entry is silky, revealing notes of molasses, roasted hazelnuts, strong coffee, and soft smoke. A touch of spiced orange peel adds brightness. The finish is long, gently salty, with lingering notes of pepper, cocoa, and wood spice.
Ardbeg An Oa is a masterclass in balance within the world of peated whisky. Thanks to the integration in the gathering vat, the wood influence is harmoniously blended, creating a softer, more approachable texture while preserving the depth and character that defines Ardbeg. Less aggressive than the 10 Years Old, but no less intriguing.
An Oa is ideal for those entering the world of Islay, or for connoisseurs looking for a subtler take on peat. It’s complex, charismatic, and unmistakably Ardbeg.
12bouteilles' Tip: Enjoy neat or with a few drops of water to unlock its full aromatic potential. Excellent with dark chocolate, cured meats, or aged hard cheeses like comté or manchego.
