Almaviva EPU 2024 is the second wine of Almaviva, produced from the great Chilean terroir of Puente Alto in the Maipo Valley. First made in 2007, EPU – meaning “two” in the Mapuche language – shares the Grand Vin's exacting approach to selection and winemaking while pursuing a different expression: more fruit-driven, less influenced by new oak and approachable earlier. The 2024 vintage is a particularly fresh and precise example.
Colour: deep and brilliant red.
Nose: blackcurrant, black cherry and plum combine with graphite, sweet tobacco and red pepper, followed by floral notes and balsamic nuances of oregano and thyme.
Palate: juicy and energetic, with a texture that combines suppleness and structure. Fine, precise tannins frame vibrant fruit, while freshness provides excellent balance. The persistent, harmonious finish brings together red and dark fruit, graphite, aromatic herbs and spice.
EPU 2024 is composed of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Carmenère, 2% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. The Cabernet Sauvignon comes primarily from Puente Alto, at the foot of the Andes, one of Chile's most highly regarded terroirs for the variety. Poor, free-draining alluvial soils and cool Andean nights help combine concentration with freshness and fine tannins.
The 2024 vintage brought an end to a prolonged period of drought in Chile. Winter and spring rainfall replenished water reserves, while a cooler-than-average spring delayed the growing cycle. A warmer summer then allowed the grapes to ripen gradually and evenly. Harvest took place from 25 March to 3 May for the principal vineyard parcels, extending to 10 May for Carmenère.
EPU 2024 was matured for 12 months in French oak barrels, only 10% of them new. This restrained use of oak is one of the key differences between EPU and Almaviva, preserving vibrant fruit and allowing Cabernet Sauvignon to remain at the forefront while providing sufficient structure for bottle ageing.
EPU 2024 received 94/100 from Wine Advocate, Vinous, James Suckling and Colin Hay, together with 93/100 from Jane Anson. Critics particularly highlight its freshness, precise fruit and fine tannins.
Serve EPU 2024 at around 16-18°C with rib of beef, rack of lamb, duck breast or Iberian pork. Around one hour of aeration is recommended when young. Already approachable, it also has sufficient structure to develop for a decade and beyond.
EPU 2024 should not be viewed simply as a “junior Almaviva”. More immediately fruit-driven, far less influenced by new oak and built around 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, it has a clear identity of its own. It is an excellent introduction to Puente Alto and the Almaviva style in a precise, elegant wine that will become expressive earlier than the Grand Vin.

EPU is not simply a less concentrated version of Almaviva. The 2024 contains 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and spends 12 months in oak with only 10% new barrels. Almaviva 2024 has a different blend and a considerably more ambitious maturation regime with much greater new-oak influence. EPU therefore places greater emphasis on fruit, freshness and earlier accessibility.
EPU is made by the same team within the Almaviva estate and offers a different interpretation of its winemaking philosophy. Its name means “two” in the Mapuche language. Much like the second wines of leading Bordeaux estates, its purpose is not to reproduce the Grand Vin exactly, but to offer a distinct and earlier-drinking expression.
Choose EPU 2024 if you want a precise, fresh and fruit-driven Chilean Cabernet that can be enjoyed relatively young. Choose Almaviva 2024 for the greater complexity, depth, oak influence and long-term ageing potential of the Grand Vin. EPU is therefore an excellent introduction to the Almaviva universe without attempting to imitate its flagship wine.
Yes. With 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2024 is firmly Cabernet-led. Carmenère accounts for 15% and contributes distinctly Chilean spicy and herbal nuances, while Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot play much smaller supporting roles.
EPU and Seña occupy different positions. EPU is Almaviva's second wine, designed as a more approachable expression of the Puente Alto universe. Seña is a flagship wine in its own right, produced from its dedicated vineyard in the Aconcagua Valley. EPU 2024 is also much more Cabernet-dominant, whereas Malbec and Carmenère play larger roles in the Seña blend.
Yes. This is one of EPU's advantages compared with the Grand Vin. Its fine tannins, vibrant fruit and restrained oak influence make it enjoyable after around an hour of aeration. It nevertheless has enough structure to develop in bottle, with published critic drinking windows extending broadly from the mid-2020s into the early 2040s.
