PRIMEURS 2025 in Bordeaux

The Magic of a Legendary Vintage

While 2024 was a vintage of pleasure and accessibility, 2025 immediately asserts itself as a landmark vintage. Proudly following in the mythical footsteps of the "years ending in 5" (1985, 2005, 2015), Bordeaux has produced a spectacular year, combining solar intensity with unexpected freshness.

The climatic conditions dictated low yields, but exceptional quality. After a delicate spring marked by slight coulure (poor fruit set), the summer settled in with bright, constant heat. It was the "miracle of September," with its warm days and very cool nights, that preserved vibrant acidities and refined the grape skins.

This is a great, classic vintage built for cellaring, yet the precision of the extraction will allow it to be enjoyed earlier than its illustrious predecessors. Alcohol levels are perfectly managed. The whites are broad and textured, but it is with the reds that the real magic happens: a tannic structure of absolute velvet and fruit of crystal-clear purity.

The Olympus of the First Growths: A Rare Unanimity

If there is one thing the tastings this week have confirmed, it is that the First Growths have all bordered on perfection. Whether on the Left Bank or the Right Bank, none have disappointed. They deliver masterful interpretations of their terroirs with staggering concentration, elegance, and precision. The critics are unanimous: most of them are already displaying potential score ranges of 98 to 100 points. They fully justify their rank and are already cementing their place as absolute legends of the decade.

The Left Bank: The Elegance of Cabernets

Margaux

The delicacy of Margaux shines particularly bright in solar years when the deep gravel terroirs prevent water stress. In 2025, the aromatic purity is dazzling. Château Margaux flirts with perfection (potential 100 points), with a proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon that brings breathtaking class and length. Critics have praised the energy of the biodynamically farmed estates: Palmer and Durfort-Vivens display impressive vitality. Rauzan-Ségla and Brane-Cantenac stand out as must-haves, offering a taffeta-like texture. This week, growths such as Château d'Issan, Malescot St. Exupéry, and Marquis d'Alesme also created a buzz with scores exceeding 96+, praised for their immediate charm and tremendous progression.

Saint-Julien

The epicenter of Gironde regularity delivers wines of perfect symmetry in 2025. Château Léoville Las Cases is monumental: dense, architectural, it is built to traverse the decades. Ducru-Beaucaillou and Léoville Barton are masterpieces of Medoc classicism. Critics have also highlighted the dazzling return to the top for Gruaud Larose, as well as the dark fruit intensity of Saint-Pierre and Langoa Barton. In terms of unmissable value for money, Branaire-Ducru (showing devilish precision in this vintage), Château Gloria, and Talbot will be obvious strategic purchases.

Pauillac

The undisputed king of the vintage. The clay-gravel terroirs have sublimated the Cabernet Sauvignons. Beyond Mouton Rothschild and Lafite Rothschild, which stand head and shoulders above the rest, Pichon Comtesse (+++) is phenomenal (regularly scoring 97-99), its tannins evoking the finest silk. Pontet-Canet radiates with vibrant energy, and Lynch-Bages signs a wine of remarkable contained power. The echoes of the tastings also highlight the superb juiciness of Clerc Milon and d'Armailhac, as well as the ultra-classic backbone of Château Batailley. For highly intelligent buys, Grand-Puy-Lacoste and Haut-Batailley remain absolute benchmarks.

Saint-Estèphe

The clay terroirs of Saint-Estèphe played their role as water regulators to perfection. The wines are dense and deep, yet have lost the austerity of their youth.
