Château Martet
Château Martet: Excellence, Terroir, and Legacy
A Historic Estate in the Heart of Sainte-Foy Côtes de Bordeaux
Château Martet, located in the commune of Eynesse within the Sainte-Foy Côtes de Bordeaux AOC, is a historic vineyard combining heritage, passion, and innovation. Originally a Templar hospital house founded in the 13th century, the estate was acquired in 1991 by Patrick de Coninck and Albert Michiels, who aimed to restore its former glory.
Between 1993 and 2006, the vineyard was entirely restructured with low-density, high-trained vines. In 1998, renowned winemaker Louis Mitjavile brought his expertise, implementing meticulous techniques such as spring de-budding, green harvesting, and selective leaf thinning, resulting in exceptional cuvées like Réserve de Famille and La Fierté de Mon Père.
The 37-hectare vineyard sits atop clay-limestone and iron-rich gravel soils, benefiting from a temperate continental climate. These optimal natural conditions ensure full grape maturity and wines with a remarkable tannic structure and aging potential.
Grapes, Winemaking, and Environmental Commitment
Château Martet’s excellence is rooted in its grape selection and precision winemaking. The red grape varietals consist of 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet (Sauvignon & Franc), while the whites are a blend of 60% Sémillon, 20% Sauvignon Gris, 15% Sauvignon Blanc, and 5% Muscadelle.
Since 1992, the estate has invested in modern facilities, including a pneumatic press, stainless steel vats, and strict temperature control. In 2003, a dedicated barrel cellar was built, housing 600 new oak barrels annually for the aging of red wines, enhancing complexity and finesse.
Driven by respect for nature and tradition, Château Martet follows a strong eco-responsible philosophy. Without chemical fertilizers or pesticides, the estate employs sustainable soil practices to preserve biodiversity. Currently undergoing HVE3 certification, the estate continues to honor the legacy of Patrick de Coninck with the involvement of Nina Mitjavile, ensuring authenticity in every bottle of this exceptional Bordeaux estate.
