Domaine Gérard Bertrand: A Terroir of Excellence and Innovation

History and Familial Excellence

Domaine Gérard Bertrand embodies the wine-growing tradition of Southern France, where the passion for wine is passed down from generation to generation. As early as 1975, in the vineyards of Château de Villemajou in the heart of the Corbières, Gérard Bertrand discovered his vocation while sharing the harvest with his father, Georges Bertrand. Bolstered by this experience and the values acquired on the rugby fields—rigor, performance, and excellence—he took up the family mantle after his father’s tragic passing in 1987. Five years later, he founded Société des Vins Gérard Bertrand to showcase the terroirs of Languedoc.

The richness of this history is reflected in the acquisition and development of prestigious estates such as Domaine de Cigalus, Château Laville Bertrou, and, in 2002, Château l’Hospitalet located in the La Clape natural park. These strategic investments have enriched a range of authentic wines while perpetuating a family know-how that began as early as 1920 with Paule Bertrand and was elevated by Georges and Gérard Bertrand. Today, this tradition is carried on by the fourth generation, with Emma and Mathias continuing the legacy of excellence and innovation within the group.

Biodynamics, Innovation, and the Art of Living

Gérard Bertrand and his teams are convinced that viticulture in harmony with nature is the best way to reveal a terroir’s nuances. As early as 2002, the transition to biodynamics began at Domaine de Cigalus, adopting techniques such as the use of natural composts and biodynamic herbal teas, all while respecting cosmic rhythms. Today, all the vineyards are in the process of converting to DEMETER certification, ensuring exceptional wines that reflect the typicality of Languedoc.

The Gérard Bertrand group also stands out for its values of innovation, naturalness, and conviviality. By creating singular wines from unique parcels – as illustrated by innovative packaging such as the Côte des Roses range – the estate anticipates and meets the expectations of a clientele in search of authentic experiences. At the same time, its commitment to the environment is demonstrated through the preservation of biodiversity and the reduction of its carbon footprint, as well as initiatives like the “Objectif 10 000 arbres” agroforestry project in collaboration with Yann Arthus-Bertrand.
