Ao Yun: The Himalayan Wine Masterpiece of Altitude and Elegance
An exceptional terroir at the edge of the world
Ao Yun was born from an extraordinary challenge: to craft a world-class wine in one of the most remote and elevated regions on Earth. Nestled in China’s Yunnan province, near the fabled Shangri-La, the vineyard stretches between 2,200 and 2,600 meters above sea level, on the Himalayan foothills. This extreme environment—marked by strong sunlight, cool nights, and low humidity—allows grapes to ripen slowly, preserving their natural acidity and building exceptional aromatic depth.
Ao Yun, meaning “flying above the clouds,” reflects both the physical elevation and the pursuit of excellence. The vineyard is managed with respect for the land and the traditions of local Tibetan communities. Grapes are grown on terraced slopes with diverse soils—shale, sand, and clay—that nurture vines producing Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc of outstanding quality.
Each plot is harvested by hand and vinified separately in small batches to capture the individuality of each terroir. The wines are aged in carefully selected French oak barrels, where new oak is used judiciously to enhance rather than overpower the wine’s minerality and freshness. The result is a wine that combines structure, depth, and finesse in remarkable harmony.
A rare sensory journey in every glass
Ao Yun offers a profound tasting experience, defined by elegance, silky texture, and layered complexity. The bouquet opens with ripe black fruit—blackcurrant, blackberry—followed by floral notes of violet and touches of licorice, cedar, and graphite. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, with refined tannins, vibrant acidity, and a lingering finish marked by spice and minerality.
It pairs beautifully with gourmet dishes such as roast rack of lamb, Peking duck, or beef tenderloin. Aged hard cheeses like Parmesan or Comté also complement its balance and depth. Each vintage offers its own expression: 2016 impresses with power, 2017 with finesse, and the latest releases continue to surprise with their elegance and aging potential.
As production is limited, every bottle of Ao Yun is a rare treasure. For discerning wine lovers looking to explore a unique terroir and a pioneering vision, Ao Yun stands as a benchmark.
