Super-Toscans are high-end cult wines from the Tuscan vineyards. Blends of international grapes (often French) and autochthonous grape varieties, the production of its “alternative“ wines began in 1970. At the time, the Italian appellations put in place do not guarantee the quality of the wines. The Super-Tuscans are born, to certify and protect the quality and geographical origin of some exceptional wines but also to allow a distinction in terms of quality between Super-Tuscans and “table wines“. This term, which does not constitute an appellation as such was notably democratised by the Anglo-Saxon press and more particularly by the American Robert Parker, famous taster and critic in oenology.
The original model was a blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet de Tignanello aged in oak barrels or barrels. Then the trend changed to produce reds made from Merlot, Syrah and Pinot Noir. Over time, the Super-Tuscans have acquired the reputation of Italy’s most esteemed red wines.
