An iconic Médoc wine born from exceptional terroir

Clos du Marquis is a distinguished red wine from the renowned Saint-Julien appellation on Bordeaux’s Left Bank. Originally created as the second wine of Château Léoville Las Cases, it has gained independence and recognition as a top-tier cuvée. Today, Clos du Marquis stands on its own as a refined, structured wine rooted in a prestigious terroir known for elegance and complexity.

The Delon family, also owners of Léoville Las Cases, oversees this exceptional estate with the same meticulous standards. The vineyard benefits from deep gravel soils and a temperate microclimate near the Gironde estuary, producing grapes of superb quality. This privileged location, close to top Classified Growths, helps create a wine that reflects the finesse of Saint-Julien and the structure of Pauillac.

Each vintage is crafted with precision, blending predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot and Petit Verdot. This composition brings remarkable aromatic depth: blackcurrant, blackberry, tobacco, cedar, and delicate spices unfold over a robust tannic structure. Consistently outstanding years like 2000, 2005, 2009, 2010, 2016, and 2018 have solidified its place among Bordeaux’s most reliable and respected wines.

Tasting experience, food pairings, and aging potential

Clos du Marquis delivers a bold yet balanced tasting profile. On the palate, its attack is direct and precise, with firm tannins that soften gracefully over time. The aromatic palette evolves from ripe dark fruits and graphite to notes of underbrush, truffle, leather, and spice as the wine matures. It can be enjoyed young with decanting, but truly blossoms after 8 to 15 years in the cellar, reaching its peak between 10 and 20 years.

For food pairings, it shines with hearty dishes such as roast beef, lamb shoulder, venison, duck breast, or wild boar stew. It also complements aged cheeses like Comté, Parmesan, or mature cheddar. Decanting for one to two hours is recommended to fully open up its bouquet, and optimal serving temperature is between 16°C and 18°C.
