Located in the prestigious Pauillac appellation on Bordeaux’s Left Bank, Château Haut-Batailley is one of the region’s most respected Grand Crus. Classified as a Fifth Growth in the legendary 1855 Bordeaux classification, the estate covers around 22 hectares of gravelly hillsides that provide excellent drainage and exposure. These natural advantages are paired with a temperate oceanic climate, encouraging slow, even ripening of the grapes and the development of refined, powerful wines.
The vineyard is primarily planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (70%), lending firm structure, aging potential, and signature Pauillac character. Merlot (25%) offers roundness and supple texture, while Cabernet Franc (5%) brings added aromatic finesse. This balanced blend results in complex wines that are both expressive and elegant, revealing notes of blackcurrant, tobacco leaf, cedar, and graphite, with fresh acidity and lingering length. Every vintage reflects the unique identity of the estate and its Médoc origins.
The estate’s name, “Haut-Batailley,” is thought to originate from a battle fought on its grounds during the Hundred Years’ War, embedding centuries of history into its very soil. Though its legacy is ancient, the estate’s modern prestige grew under the stewardship of the Borie family, a household name in Bordeaux winemaking. Since acquiring the estate in the 20th century, the family has preserved its noble reputation through careful management and constant pursuit of quality.
Today, François-Xavier Borie leads the estate with a dedication to sustainable viticulture and exacting cellar practices. Grapes are hand-harvested, sorted with precision, and fermented under controlled conditions to ensure purity and balance. The wines are then aged in French oak barrels to develop structure and complexity, offering depth and sophistication over time. The second label, Château La Tour l’Aspic, crafted with equal care, provides a more accessible expression while maintaining the estate’s high standards.
Now available through 12bouteilles, Château Haut-Batailley continues to captivate wine lovers with its consistent excellence, refined structure, and authentic Pauillac character. A true gem of Bordeaux’s Left Bank, it represents the harmonious union of history, terroir, and family passion.
