Château Cos Labory, a Must-Try Classified Growth from Saint-Estèphe

A Grand Cru with roots in one of Bordeaux's finest terroirs

Ranked as a 5th Grand Cru Classé in 1855, Château Cos Labory exemplifies the structure and elegance of wines from Saint-Estèphe, on Bordeaux’s Left Bank. Nestled on the famed Cos hill, the estate enjoys a privileged location in the Médoc, surrounded by legendary vineyards. The name pays homage to both the estate’s unique topography and the Labory family, who owned the château until the late 19th century.

Today, the estate is run by the Audoy family, who have carefully preserved its heritage for over a century. Spanning 18 hectares, the vineyard thrives on deep gravel soils that ensure excellent drainage and optimal grape ripeness. The proximity to the Gironde estuary and the oceanic climate bring freshness and consistency to each vintage, resulting in reliable and expressive wines year after year.

Classic Médoc grape varieties and refined winemaking

Château Cos Labory's vineyard is planted with 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, and 5% Cabernet Franc — a traditional Médoc blend that yields wines with depth, tannic strength, and long aging potential. With an average vine age of 38 years, the estate prioritizes traditional cultivation and careful manual harvesting to ensure only the best grapes reach the cellar.

Fermentation is carried out at low temperatures to retain maximum aromatic finesse. The wines are aged in French oak barrels — a proportion of them new — to provide structure and complexity without overpowering the fruit. The result is a deep-colored wine with notes of black fruit, spices, and well-integrated oak, delivering a classic Saint-Estèphe profile with elegance and balance.

In addition to its flagship wine, the estate produces a second label, Le Charme de Cos Labory, crafted from younger vines. This wine offers earlier drinking pleasure and introduces wine lovers to the estate’s signature style with finesse and accessibility.
